A-Sides CD Release party

It’s the start of the last weekend of summer. The Phillies game is over, the Eagles are just going through the motions in pre-season, so get to Johnny Brendas tonight (Thursday night)! It is an all local show with The Capitol Years, Bitter Bitter Weeks, and the CD release party for The A-Sides. From the looks of it, this may be the last time for at least a month to see them in the area. Oh, and its for a good cause with all proceeds going to charity.

The A-Sides – Cinematic
The Capitol Years – You Can Stay There
Bitter Bitter Weeks – Danger in the Halls

Tokyo Police Club/Ra Ra Riot/Jukebox The Ghost – Rock and Roll Hotel – 8/7/07

This was one of my most anticipated concerts of the summer and oddly enough, the show actually lived up to my lofty expectations. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one. The show sold out early. Even getting to the Rock and Roll Hotel a half hour before it started, did not guarantee a spot in the front row. The younger fans were sitting against the stage in great anticipation for what was to become an amazing show.

The first band was DC’s own Jukebox the Ghost. I had not heard much of them prior to the show and was extremely surprised at how good they really were. They played a really great set of indie pop, switching off between main singers and giving the crowd plenty of songs to dance to. For a band that has only released a 5 song EP, they had plenty of songs in their repertoire. After the show, I got to meet the guys and they were some of the nicest people that I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Go out and grab their EP to prepare yourself, as they make their way up and down the East Coast over the coming weeks. These guys are going to get big, so get on board now.

Next up was Ra Ra Riot, who unfortunately lost their drummer earlier this summer. However, it seemed to make them bring it even harder and there was barely a moment during their songs when any of them would be standing still.

They started off the set with “Each Year,” which is one of my favorites from their EP. The energy felt by the crowd before the set was only heightened with band members dancing with each other, getting up on monitors to sing and just generally bringing lots of raw emotion to their music. It is rare these days to see a lead singer who only sings and it was a welcomed sight, because the showmanship was just immaculate and he really gave the crowd everything we wanted.

The two ladies on the strings, really added to the overall sound. The violinist even added vocals to a few of the songs. There were some problems with her mic early on, but everything was fixed by the end and she sounded great. The band even played several new songs that I am sure they will play on September 6th at the 9:30 Club, when they open for Editors.

Finally, it was time for Tokyo Police Club. Ever since I got A Lesson in Crime, I have been hoping for these guys to come to DC when I was in town. They finally got here and it was everything that I had been waiting for.

The guys played all the songs off A Lesson in Crime as well as songs from the Smith EP and my favorite, the single “Your English Is Good.” I got a video of the song when they played it and when I get it edited, I will find a place to host it and post it on IA for everyone to watch. The energy these guys brought was hard to believe and was even greater than that of Ra Ra Riot. The sold out crowd was singing along with every song they knew and listened intently to the new songs the guys previewed.

After signing with Saddle Creek
, these guys seem to be stepping it up another notch. If their new CD sounds anything like the new songs they played, it will be one of the best of 2008. I really look forward to that release and the guys coming back to DC.

Band of Horses News

If you enjoy some of the best alt rock/indie music that is coming out of the Pacific Northwest right now, then you have probably heard of Band of Horses. They came to the 9:30 Club not too long ago and I even featured them in one of my mixes.

They have made the first single from their new album available for download and I have it here for you. Along with the new single, they have released the album artwork for their new CD Cease to Begin, which is set to be released October 9th. Enjoy.

With Labor Day and the unofficial end to summer just around the corner, its time to get out. Tonight, head to The Khyber and check out SeepeopleS from Asheville. They blend so many styles, I can’t begin to list them all. Joining them are Low Water from Brooklyn and Philly locals Ports of Call and Beautiful Traps.

You can also catch Low Water at The Abbey at ABC on Thursday.

Cedars Say Goodbye *Update*

Update: There will not be a farewell show. Let the lamenting begin.

In what seems to be a constant theme in DC these days, another band is saying goodbye. This time, it happens to be one of my personal favorites. Cedars just sent out this statement announcing their split:

“Cedars are no longer a functioning band. We’d like to give a special thanks to a few of the many people who were with us through these last 3+ years of Cedars/Cartel madness. Many thanks to Mark W. Hemingway who was an original member. A firm hand-shake to Rob Muller who managed us, booked gigs and tried getting our act together with great patience on a pro-bono basis!! Tons of respect and gratitude to www.woxy.com. Mike, Shivy, Barb (and by extension one Mr. Brad Freeman) exposed our music to people we would have otherwise never imagined reaching. For that we’ll be eternally grateful. Thanks to all our friends who consistently showed up at our gigs and got their friends to come out even when it was a tough sell, Mitch & Dezi come to mind. Thanks to all the club bookers in DC: Lisa@9:30, Viki@Black Cat, Stephen@IOTA, Bryan@DC9, Stephen@RnRHotel, etc etc etc. Thanks to Kyle G., Peter D. and Rebecca A. for championing us in the media via DCist, blogs, the Express, On Tap, etc. Thanks are also due to Bracken Records for the Fleets single in the UK, cheerio’.

A pint in the air goes to all the bands we shared a stage with. Army of Me, Soft Complex, Monopoli, Telograph, Middle Distance Runner, Vita Ruins, Shade and Airthieves shared the stage with us on multiple occasions, many of them on special nights such as cd release parties, residences or buzzed-about shows. In that sense, big thanks to Washington Social Club who gave us the chance to play the mainstage of the Black Cat for the first time…looking back it was a huge step for us. Cheers to the national/international acts who let us open their shows, here’s to the like of Editors, Stellastarr*, French Kicks, Lake Trout, Giant Drag, Augustana, SeaRay (flashback!), Cinematics, the Changes, Aloha, Voxtrot, Afterhours, Jeremy Enigk and any other band my forgetful memory could’ve missed.

We hope we find a way to pay back Nelson Poket, Miguel Cunillera and the Dominican Republic crew for making our trip & shows there one of the band’s best memories…if not the best memory. You were class acts all around and we didn’t take a thing for granted. MIL GRACIAS y PA’LANTE!!

We had grand ambitions; we wanted to settle for our dreams and no less. Some might chalk it up to plain naiveté, but it stemmed out of our own massive self-belief and a (healthy) lacking dose of cynicism. We’ll all personally look back at this time and make our own conclusions as to if we failed or succeeded, if it was a thing of luck, timing or else. Either way, it’s been pretty damn interesting and that’s more than what we could’ve said of our own lives had we not had Cedars in it. Ed and Luke are already dreaming it up again and working on some real cool stuff from what I hear, I’ll most likely be sitting in with them at some point. Brian is going off to tend to his personal life and best interests. We’ll most likely announce through here any new endeavours we may embark on for those who might care or be curious enough.

Our farewell show is being discussed about and will most likely take place within the next weeks, stay tuned.

With cache to spare and a heartfelt thanks, we bid you all farewell…

xx Cedars”

We wish the guys the best and we’ll let you know the details of their last show, as soon as they pass them on.

Monday Night

It’s a rather slow night to start a rather slow week, but there is at least one show worth seeing. J. Forté and The Secret Pop Band are playing Black Cat with The Chance. This should be a nice and intimate local show. Go support and turn the backstage into the sweat box that it was meant to be.
